The most common health complaints I hear from my clients are low energy, fatigue, and lack of motivation. I’ve come to view each of these as very real symptoms of energy imbalance that almost everyone feels, myself included.

Over the summer I began studying another way to evaluate my clients’ health, called Hair Mineral Analysis, which specifically looks to find the underlying biochemical causes of fatigue. I’m now offering this service to everyone.  So what exactly is it? Here’s an overview pulled largely from the textbook written by my mentor, Dr. Larry Wilson.

What is Hair Mineral Testing?

Hair Mineral Analysis is a soft tissue mineral biopsy that uses hair as the sampling tissue.  A biopsy is a cellular analysis of a body tissue, since hair is considered a soft tissue, hair analysis is a soft tissue biopsy. Another type, for example, would be a liver biopsy, which samples liver cells to find cancer, check for high levels of iron, etc.

A Hair Mineral Analysis measures the levels of 21 minerals in the hair with an accuracy of plus or minus about 3%.  This is about the same level of accuracy as most blood tests, but without the discomfort of a blood draw. Plus you can also send in your own hair sample without needing to go to a doctor.

Hair Mineral Analysis is generally considered a screening test, rather than a diagnostic test. Screening tests are inexpensive, non-invasive, and provide a lot of information rapidly. When performed and interpreted correctly, hair mineral testing is a sophisticated method for assessing, monitoring, and then guiding the correction of body chemistry. It looks at how the systems of the body are functioning and can identify imbalances long before they turn in to diseases.

Why Measure Minerals?

Minerals are sometimes called the “spark plugs” of the body.  They are needed for millions of enzymes as co-factors, inhibitors, and as part of the enzymes themselves, which keep the body running efficiently.  As a result, they have a big impact the health of our bodies and our energy levels.  By analyzing mineral imbalances in the body, we can learn a lot about the causes, and ultimately correct, hundreds of common physical and mental health conditions. This includes how fast or slow you are “oxidizing,” or burning your food for energy, and how your adrenal and thyroid hormones are working. Three very important factors in how much energy you have.

Toxic Metals

A specific class of minerals, toxic metals, are extremely common now due to our nutritionally depleted foods and the presence of environmental toxicity almost everywhere on the planet.  When we don’t have enough of the right minerals available, our bodies can substitute toxic ones, but of course they don’t do the job perfectly. Knowing what toxic metals we carry is an important step to understanding their damaging effects on us and how to safely detoxify from them.

Putting it All Together

Hair mineral analysis looks at the levels of minerals and metals, the ratios of the major minerals, and other complex mineral patterns in our bodies that help us understand human health and disease. Deep healing requires balancing these minerals, so we can feel better and better, and recover our once-great energy levels.

With a Hair Mineral Analysis I can give you a complete report and explanation of what it’s telling you about your health. Then I create customized food suggestions to fine-tune how your body makes energy, a protocol for supplements that is specific to your biochemical needs right now, and detoxification information as needed. A retest is done in 4-6 months in order to keep your recommendations current as you’re healing.
